Southampton Police Join Aggressive-Driving Crackdown

In all, 64 departments in Bucks, Montgomery, Delaware and Chester counties will take part in the program, which runs through August.

SOUTHAMPTON, PA — Police in Southampton are joining 63 other departments throughout the area in a crackdown on aggressive driving.

The departments in Bucks, Chester, Delaware and Montgomery counties will join Pennsylvania State Police in conducting special activities to help reduce the number of crashes, injuries and deaths on the state's roadways. The mobilization runs through Aug. 25.

Police departments in both Upper Southampton and Lower Southampton will be participating.

Specifically, local police will be focusing on running red lights, Pennsylvania's "Steer Clear" law, tailgaiting and heavy trucks. Drivers guilty of distracted driving, speeding and failing to stop at stop signs also will be cited, state police said.

According to PennDOT, there were 1,482 aggressive-driving related crashes and 17 deaths in Bucks, Chester, Delaware and Montgomery counties in 2017.

Last year, local police agencies wrote 50,707 aggressive-driving related citations during the statewide campaign, including 30,917 for speeding. Failing to stop for red lights and stop signs resulted in another 3,657 citations, state police said.

There were 68 felony arrests, 142 fugitives apprehended, 200 drunk or drugged drivers arrested and 1,259 "occupant protection" citations for things like not wearing a seat belt.
In Bucks County, the following police departments will be taking part in the crackdown:

  • Richland Township
  • Warrington Township
  • Upper Southampton Township
  • Buckingham Township
  • Penndel Township
  • Warwick Township
  • Bristol Township
  • New Britain Township
  • Lower Southampton Township
  • Doylestown Township
  • Hilltown Township
