Upper Southampton Basketball League Shoots for Fun Summer Nights

Registration for the Upper Southampton Basketball League for in grades 3 – 12 and over ends on June 20.

In an age of digital distractions, the Upper Southampton Parks and Recreation Department would like to offer youth some good old-fashioned outdoor fun with its annual Basketball League.

“It’s more about fun and a way to get kids to get playing,” Ray Horn, Upper Southampton Parks and Recreation Facilities coordinator, said. “It’s something for kids to do at night.”

The Basketball League, which has been going on for the last decade, divides team play for youth in grades 3 – 12, and those in college and over.

According to Horn, the league has been a popular staple among basketball players, with over 200 participants in last year’s league.

Playing time is rotated among the teams, but generally runs from 6 – 9 p.m. Games will typically be played on the outside courts of the Upper Southampton Community Center, located at 913 Willow Street in Southampton. The address is also the location of the Park and Recreation department.

However, according to Horn, should inclement weather occur, play will resume on a turn basis for teams, inside the Community Center.

The league is expected to hold 10 games for each team, two games per week. Horn said that by the first week of August, all teams will be expected to participate in playoffs, leading to a championship game.

  • Teams in grades 3 – 12 will play on Tuesday and Thursday
  • Teams in college or older will play Monday and Wednesday

The teams themselves will be formed during the league’s evaluation night, June 20. Horn said that the teams will be comprised of players of mixed skill, however, player requests to be with friends on certain teams will also be taken into account.

Registration deadline for league play is June 20. All players will have a registration fee of $65, which, Horn said, will go toward the cost of referees and team t-shirts.

There is also a $30 additional fee to play in multiple leagues.

The Parks and Recreation Department encourages players to register online at www.lss-web.com/login.aspx. Those that register online will receive a $10 discount off the registration fee.
