How Current COVID-19 Cases In Pennsylvania Compare To The Nation

New daily cases of COVID-19 are declining in the United States. There were an average of 7.3 new daily cases of the COVID-19 for every 100,000 Americans in the last week, down from 9.4 new daily cases per 100,000 the week before.

Since the first known COVID-19 case was identified in the U.S. on Jan. 21, 2020, there have been a total of about 32,845,000 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus in the United States — or 10,039 for every 100,000 people.

In Pennsylvania, the infection rate is lower than the national average. Since the first known case of COVID-19 was reported in Pennsylvania on Mar. 6, 2020, there have been 1,197,468 total infections in the state — or 9,350 for every 100,000 people. Of all 50 states and Washington D.C., Pennsylvania ranks No. 39 by cumulative COVID-19 cases, adjusted for population.

Though COVID-19 infections are less concentrated in Pennsylvania, deaths are not. So far, there have been 27,085 COVID-19 related deaths in Pennsylvania, or 211 for every 100,000 people. Meanwhile, the national COVID-19 death rate stands at 179 per 100,000 Americans.

Like other states with a lower than average COVID-19 infection rate,Pennsylvania implemented strict measures early in the pandemic to help slow the virus’s spread. On April 1, 2020, Pennsylvania implemented a temporary statewide stay-at-home order to limit person-to-person contact.
