Guns Banned in Rhode Island Schools Except For Police

Gov. Raimondo said this will close a loophole in state law that allows people with concealed carry permits to have a gun in school.

PROVIDENCE, RI — Gov. Gina Raimondo took executive action to ban guns from schools in Rhode Island, with an exception for police.

Raimondo and Education Commissioner Ken Wagner said the governor's order will close a loophole in state law that allows people with concealed carry permits to bring guns into school.

It is not a criminal offense for an employee to bring a gun to school, Wagner said, but school districts can take disciplinary action for ignoring the ban.

"We've taken action, but we still need to do more," Raimondo told reporters, also highlighting $10 million in existing funds from the state budget for security upgrades.
