Barrington Police Warn To Keep Fireworks Off Town Property

While care and consideration should be taken in any fireworks use, they are strictly prohibited on town property.

BARRINGTON, RI — With the racket of fireworks on the rise throughout the region, Barrington police are warning residents that even legal fireworks in RI are not allowed on town property.

"Lighting off fireworks on town property, including Barrington Town Beach, Latham Park, Allin's Cove and at schools and playgrounds is prohibited," Barrington police said.

Here in Rhode Island, the only fireworks that can legally be purchased and used are hand-held sparklers and ground fireworks, according to the office of the state fire marshal. Ground-based fireworks include those that create a shower of sparks as their main effect. Colored flames, crackling, whistling and smoke are also allowed, as long as they do not produce explode or produce a loud report.

Anything that launches into the air or fires projectiles is illegal.

The state fire marshal's office encouraged residents not to call 911 to report a firework complaint, instead the local police department's non-emergency line.

Barrington Town Hall, Barrington Public Works, Barrington Public Town Library, the Peck Center For Adult Enrichment and Recycling Center will all be closed for the holiday on July 6. Barrington Public Library will also be closed on July 4 and 5. The Recycling Center will be closed July 4 as well.
