Craigslist Leads Detectives To Teen Thieves In Barrington, EP

Barrington Police said the two, both 16, stole a golf cart, broke into a yacht and took valuables worth about $28,000.

BARRINGTON, RI — Two 16-year-old boys are headed to Family Court after police said they stole a golf cart and some $28,000 worth of valuables. According to Barrington police Chief John LaCross, the two, who are from East Providence, broke into a yacht at Cove Haven Marina in Barrington and stole several items.

Barrington police started investigating Oct. 27 after the yacht owner reported the break-in. He told officers he was last on the boat Oct. 21. He estimated the stolen goods were worth about $30,000.

One of the boys listed five of the valuable for sale on Craigslist, and an undercover officer met the teen at the Webster Bank on Willet Avenue in East Providence. Police quickly verified the item had been stolen and pressed charges. Officers also searched the teen's house and located more missing items from the yacht as well as other stolen goods from break-ins in East Providence.

Police said the teen had an accomplice, also 16. His house was searched, and more stolen goods were found. More items were found during a third search of a vacant building in East Providence, police said.

The two are also being charged with a breaking and entering at Rhode Island Country Club and the theft of a golf cart, police said.

The investigation is continuing, but so far police estimate they have recovered some $8,000 worth of stolen items from the Barrington yacht and $20,000 in stolen tools and other items from the East Providence break-ins."

The juveniles are with their families pending their court appearance. They will be charged with several felonies.

Barrington and East Providence police worked together on the case, the chief said.
