From The YMCA of Greater Providence: The YMCA of Greater Providence is pleased to announce that they have received swim lesson grants through the YMCA of USA earmarked towards providing swim lessons to children whose families cannot afford to purchase them. The grants were distributed to three local branches; East Side/ Mount Hope YMCA received $6,000, Kent County YMCA received $6,000 and Bayside Family YMCA received $3,000.
As a leader in providing swim lessons and water safety tips, the grants allow the YMCA branches to offer 50, 75 or 100 swim lesson scholarships to children whose families cannot afford to purchase swim lessons. These children will have an opportunity to learn basic water safety skills, beach-safety tips and have a chance to increase their physical activity through swimming.
“Safety around water is a priority for the Ocean State and we are proud to announce the Y-USA grants in support of this mission,” said Steven G. O’Donnell, CEO of the YMCA of Greater Providence. “Every year we hear about tragic stories of children drowning and this program will allow us to expand our reach into needy communities to help ensure that children learn how to be safe in and around water this summer.”
