Rhode Island is the worst state in the country for doctors, according to a new report.
WalletHub ranked each state based on factors like earnings, malpractice payouts, and competition. Rhode Island has the second-most competitive market and high malpractice payouts, according to the report.
South Carolina topped the rankings. Massachusetts (28th) was the highest-ranked New England state.

The average medical school graduate has $176,000 in student loan debt.
“The medical profession has also been undergoing intense changes in recent years,” WalletHub wrote. “The Affordable Care Act, the rise of branded hospital networks, the impending retirement of Baby Boomers and an increasingly litigious society are all complicating the lives of doctors and providing pause to potential white-coats.”
