Coventry Native Helps Lead College Softball Team to NCAA III Super Regional

Kristin Gallagher is a member of the 2015 WPI softball team that will participate in its first NCAA Division III Super Regional on Thursday.

The Engineers will face unbeaten and top-ranked Tufts in a best-of-three series beginning at 4 p.m. Game two will be Friday at 1 p.m. with the if necessary game to follow.

Gallagher, a utility player, wears No. 14 and played a key role in WPI’s 2-0 win over Western New England in the NCAA Division III Softball regional on May 8.

She drilled a single to the right center gap, scoring teammate Nina Murphy-Cook home for the first run of the game.

On May 9, she delivered a double to right in in bottom of the first but was stranded at the end of the scoreless inning in WPI’s 2-1 win in regional play against Williamstown.

On Sunday, she put down a sacrifice bunt in the fourth, moving a pair of runners on second and third who were knocked home on a two-run single by on-deck Katie Bumilia in WPI’s clinching 4-0 win in the regional final.

WPI, who was making its first NCAA Tournament appearance in program history, improves to 34-9 and will face two-time defending national champions Tufts in a best-of-three, Super Regional next weekend. Williams, who needed to win twice Sunday to advance, closes its 2015 campaign with a 32-9 record.
