Coventry Starts Sending Recycling Violation Stickers
Department of Public Works employees started placing stickers on recycling carts explaining recycling violations.
COVENTRY, RI — The town of Coventry is taking action against residents who don't recycle properly in their curbside cart. Starting this week, residents will see a notice of violation sticker on their cart if the contents are not in compliance with what is considered acceptable materials.
The stickers serve as a first official notification under the town's new recycling ordinance, which has a three-strike policy that could lead to a fine of $300 or up to 30 days in jail upon the third violation. Residents have seven days to correct the issue after receiving their first warning, the Department of Public Works said. Workers will take a photo of the cart's contents to document the violation.
The new policy was announced in September after the town was forced to pay more than $11,000 in fines for rejected recycling loads.
