WARWICK, RI — The U.S. Coast Guard found the body of an 11-year-old girl who went missing while swimming in the water off Conimicut Point Sunday evening.

"We offered our assistance and condolences to them. They are understandably in shock," Picozzi said. "Now is not the time to ask questions or talk about signs or whatever. We’re very sad and trying to absorb this."

The search for two missing swimmers started around 6:20 p.m. Sunday. A 30-year-old man went into the water in an effort to rescue the girl and later drowned. The Coast Guard recovered his body around 8 p.m.

Sunday evening, Picozzi said that two other people were rescued from the water and taken to the hospital.

"Reports are that the adult male did not know the other victim; he lost his life trying to save the child," Picozzi said. "He was a hero."

The Coast Guard continued to search the water throughout the night for the girl, with additional crews arriving at first light.
