Make Christmas 2020 'Green' In RI With These Recycling Tips
Follow these tips to cut down on waste and recycle it right this holiday season.
Christmas is here, which, for most families, means a whole lot of wrapping paper, ribbons and packaging. From reusing bows to properly recycling wrapping paper, here are some ways to make this Christmas just a little bit greener.
While it may be tempting to ball up the wrapping paper after ripping into a gift, Rhode Island Resource Recovery said it's far easier to recycle if flat. Otherwise, the paper won't be sorted properly at the Materials Recycling Facility.
When it comes to wrapping paper, not all are created equal. Any paper wrapping, even if it is shiny or colorful, can be recycled. However, anything not made from trees — think mylar foil or cellophane — belong in the trash.

Bows, ribbons, tinsel and other decorative items are not recyclable. If possible, save these items to reuse next year. If they're beyond saving, they belong in the trash as well.
Gift bags are another great candidate for reuse, as well as the tissue paper they are stuffed with.

Once the paper is off, it's time to address the pile of cardboard and plastic that encase so many toys. The name of the game is separation. Remove the hard, clear plastic blister packaging, when can be recycled along with and cardboard that's been flattened. The extra large package windows should be placed in the trash.
When you go to take down this year's round of holiday cards, consider how they could be reused. Many cards can be cut into fun tags to use for next year's gifts, or made into fun holiday-themed bookmarks. Any made of paper should be recycled.
