Skunk Tests Positive For Rabies In Coventry

COVENTRY, RI — A skunk captured in Coventry tested positive for rabies, police said. Pet owners are encouraged to make sure their animals' vaccinations are up to date.

The skunk was found near Arnold Road and Acorn Street on Monday, police said, and was confirmed to have rabies by the Rhode Island Department of Health. The next day, a second sick skunk was captured near Grant Drive. Police did not say if the second animal was confirmed to be rabid.

Pet owners, especially those in the neighborhoods listed, are asked to be aware of odd behavior in their pets and other animals. Call Coventry Animal Control at 401-222-2284 to report a suspected rabid animal. Police also asked residents to confirm their pets' rabies vaccinations are up to date.
