Three People, Two Pets Escape Coventry House Fire

COVENTRY, RI - Three people and their two pets are homeless after a fire destroyed the house they were living in early Wednesday morning.

Firefighters responded to reports of a structure fire at 66 Hopkins Hill Rd. around 7 a.m. that had broken out in the kitchen. Within ten minutes, firefighters said they were able to get the fire under control.

Hopkins Hill Fire Chief Frank Brown told WPRI-TV that the three residents along with their dog and cat were able to safely escape the burning house thanks to a smoke alarm that alerted them to the fire.

“Once again – smoke detectors save lives,” he told the TV station.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The Red Cross is helping the displaced residents, Coventry police told WJAR-TV.

The fire initially shutdown traffic along Hopkins Hill Rd. from Tiogue Ave. to Johnson's Blvd. for two hours.
