Garage Fire Slows Tiogue Avenue Traffic For 2 Hours
A small garage fire closed one lane of Tiogue Avene for approximately two hours.
COVENTRY, RI — A small garage fire on Tiogue Avenue seriously restricted traffic on Wednesday afternoon. The fire was quickly extinguished but traffic was reduced to one alternating lane for approximately two hours as firefighters and the fire marshal investigated the cause.
Central Coventry Fire Chief Frank Brown said the fire broke out around 3:20 p.m. and was extinguished within five minutes after crews arrived. The fire was extremely minor, Brown said, and no injuries were reported. The state fire marshal's office was unable to determine what cause the fire to start.
Tiogue Avenue was completely closed to traffic for about 15 minutes before a single, alternating lane was opened. Coventry police asked drivers to avoid the area if possible to reduce traffic backups. Both lanes were reopened to traffic around 5:30 p.m.
