Cumberland Man Accidentally Lights Self On Fire: Report

A man trying to use gasoline to start an outdoor wood fire set himself ablaze and was transported to the hospital.

CRANSTON, RI — A man in his 60s who added gasoline to a wood fire he was igniting in his back yard accidentally set himself ablaze and was helped by neighbors.

Saturday night on Colonial Avenue neighbors leaped into action when they heard a loud bang and saw a man on the ground who was on fire, ABC 6 WLNE-TV reports. One neighbor battled the flames with her bare hands and another good samaritan used water. The man was transported to Rhode Island Hospital in serious condition with severe burns to both legs, according to Cumberland Acting Fire Chief Nicholas Anderson.

The state fire marshal and Cranston police responded to the scene. Anderson warned people not to use flammable liquids to start a fire.
