Coronavirus: East Providence Cancels Earth Day Cleanup
The traditional East Providence Earth Day community cleanup has been canceled due to the new coronavirus health emergency.
EAST PROVIDENCE, RI — For the first time in 25 years there will be no East Providence community cleanup on Earth Day. The event, which had been scheduled around the 50th anniversary of Earth Day on April 22, has been canceled this year due to the new coronavirus health emergency.
"This year is the 50th anniversary of Earth Day and everyone should celebrate this landmark accomplishment in some small way," the East Providence Mayor's Office said. "The city is asking that we all work together, despite being apart. We all have the same goal to keep East Providence litter free and beautiful."
City officials are asking that, instead of group pickup projects, residents look to pick up trash and other stray items around their yards, curbs and nearby sidewalks.
"Maybe even clean up your elderly neighbor's yard," officials suggested. "If working in your flower beds and dividing perennials why not share with neighbors. Get the children involved too. Plan and build a Fairy Garden together or design a butterfly garden."
