EAST PROVIDENCE, RI — Less than a week after opening its doors or the 2019 summer season, the Crescent Park Looff Carousel is once again dark and silent. Mechanical issues forced the closure of the historic carousel for the near future.

"The carousel will temporarily remain closed to the public due to a mechanical issue that is affecting the balance of the ride," the carousel's operators wrote in Facebook. "We had our long-time caretaker assess the situation, and we are unable to locate the exact cause of this imbalance."

Carousels and Carvings, a company that specializes in carousel restoration and manufacture is expected to assess the machinery this week.

Because the extent of the issue is not known at this time, it's impossible to known how long the carousel will remain closed.

"Once the cause has been determined, we will be able to create a plan for repairs and will update everyone as information becomes available," the post continued. "We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience and understanding. Our goal has always been and remains — to keep the carousel alive for generations to come."
