East Providence To Address Metacomet Golf Course Proposal

State lawmakers and residents have called for the land to remain an urban public open green space.

EAST PROVIDENCE, RI — The City of East Providence will address a proposal to take the Metacomet Golf Course by eminent domain at a city council meeting on Thursday at 7.p.m., reported ABC6.

The historic golf course, which is located on over 100 acres of land along Veterans Memorial Parkway, closed permanently in September, after which Rhode Island lawmakers Rep. Gregg Amore and Sen. Valarie J. Lawson called on the state to purchase the land as a way to protect urban public open green spaces.

Metacomet Golf Course is currently set to be redeveloped into residential and commercial property by Marshall Development. The company initially petitioned for a zone change to turn the golf course into a multipurpose property with 50% remaining public green space, but withdrew the petition last fall due to demands from residents that the property remain as is.
