East Providence To Launch Public Safety Camera Program
The program involves the installation of both red light and school zone cameras throughout the city.
EAST PROVIDENCE, RI — The City of East Providence has announced that its Public Safety traffic camera program is set to begin in the next few weeks.
By adding this program, East Providence is joining over 50o cities in the United States who have some form of public safety traffic cameras, including red light, school speed, or both. The program will commence with a 30-day warning period, after which the fine for running a red light will be $85 and the fine for speeding in a school zone will be $50.
"Each year, too many families are impacted by crashes caused by people speeding or drivers failing to stop at red lights and speed was likely a factor in more than 45 percent of all traffic fatalities in Rhode Island,” said East Providence Police Chief William Nebus in a statement. “Improving traffic safety is one of the strategic goals of the East Providence Police Dept.”

“After receiving consistent resident concerns about speeding on our city streets, we will be installing a traffic enforcement system in East Providence,” he continued. “A speed enforcement program is an effective one at deterring speeding, reducing crashes, and ultimately saving lives.”
The contractor for the program, Sensys Gatso, will cover the costs associated with the equipment, camera installation, and signage. The East Providence Police Department will be responsible for determining whether to issue a violation and drivers will retain the right to appeal violations through the judicial process.
