East Providence Mayor Awarded Portugal's Medal Of Merit
The award recognized Mayor Bob DaSilva for his work and support of Portuguese culture and communities in the United States.
EAST PROVIDENCE, RI — East Providence Mayor Bob DaSilva has received Portugal's Medal of Merit of the Community, or Medalha de Mérito das Comunidades de Portugal, according to a news release from the city.
The award recognizes DaSilva for his work and continued support of Portuguese culture and communities in the United States.
“I’d like to thank you for your work here and the work you represent for the Portuguese community,” said Dr. Berta Nunes, Portugal Secretary of State to the Communities, in a statement. “We are presenting you the Medal of Merit of the Communities of Portugal because for us you were one of the people who distinguished yourself and stood out here in the community and we’d like to recognize you for all of your work.”

The medal of merit was presented to the mayor after the Day of Portugal Flag Raising Ceremony that took place Sunday afternoon.
“Receiving this prestigious award was a surprise,” said DaSilva. “I am honored and humbled by this recognition. I take great pride in my community and my heritage and culture and I will continue to support the Portuguese community and work hard for all communities represented in our great city.”
