Gas Prices Ratchet Up

Prices at the Speedway in Seekonk were $2.72 Wednesday, so even the old Rhode Islanders trick of crossing the border on Route 6 didn't help

EAST PROVIDENCE, RI—Blame it on Hurricane Harvey or Hurricane Irma. No matter the culprit, prices at the pump are high. They've climbed as high as they've been in two years, according to AAA. The national average on Thursday for regular unleaded was $2.67. The Rhode Island average was $2.74. Even the old trick of scooting over to Route 6 in Seekonk didn't work. A gallon of unleaded was $2.72 on Wednesday at the Speedway across from Panera Bread.

Prices went even higher Thursday. The Sunoco in East Providence near the 195 ramp was selling gas for $2.89. In Middletown, a drive-by survey on West Main Road found prices at $2.66, $2.69 and $2.72.
