Viola Davis Wins Best Supporting Actress

Viola Davis, who grew up in Central Falls, was a favorite for the Best Supporting Actress award, and she won.

CENTRAL FALLS, RI — Viola Davis has been nominated three times for an Academy Award, counting Sunday's presentation. She was recognized twice in the Best Supporting Actress category (in 2008 for Doubt and now for Fences). She was also nominated once for Best Actress (in 2011 for The Help).

On Sunday night, she won.

Davis, the odds makers' favorite to walk away with the Oscar, was up against Naomie Harris (Moonlight); Michelle Williams (Manchester by the Sea); Nicole Kidman (Lion); and Octavia Spencer (Hidden Figures).

She was nominated for her portrayal of the character Rose Maxson in Fences. She won a Tony award in 2010 for the same role, which she played on Broadway. August Wilson wrote the screenplay, which is adapted from his original play.
