Rep. Amore Receives 2021 Paul Crowley Award

Rep. Gregg Amore received the award on March 15 for his commitment to education in Rhode Island.

EAST PROVIDENCE, RI — Rep. Gregg Amore has received the 2021 Paul Crowley Award from the Rhode Island School Superintendents' Association (RISSA), said the Rhode Island General Assembly in a news release Wednesday.

The annual award, named after Rep. Paul Crowley of Newport and presented to Amore on March 15, recognizes Rhode Island citizens and organizations who demonstrate a commitment to improving the quality of education for the children in the state.

“Representative Crowley’s tireless commitment to public education is well known in Rhode Island, and it is an incredible honor to receive this award in his name,” said Amore in a statement. “It has been my distinct privilege to serve Rhode Island schools, and especially our educators and students. RISSA has been and continues to be a valuable partner in this work, and I’m grateful to the RI Superintendents for this recognition.”

In 2020, Amore sponsored legislation which creates a new income tax bracket of 6.99% on taxable income over $500,000 and deposits the collected taxes into restricted receipt account to be spent on K-12 education, said the news release. He also sponsored a public education law reform in 2019 that increased building-level school management and cosponsored a law to protect student loan borrowers.

Amore was involved in passing the 2019 budget article containing historic school construction bond assistance, sponsoring the bill to place the East Providence High School construction project on the ballot for state reimbursement. He also helped create the Rhode Island Promise Program to ensure free tuition at the Community College of Rhode Island for every high school graduate in the state.
