RI DOT Outlines East Providence Henderson Bridge Project

EAST PROVIDENCE, RI — The RI Department of Transportation outlined the future of the project to rebuild the Red Bridge over the Seekonk River on Wednesday.

The bridge, which was declared structurally deficient in 1996, will be rebuilt as part of an $88.5 million.

RIDOT will demolish it and build a narrower structure with two lanes of traffic westbound and one lane eastbound connecting Providence and East Providence. The project will also include separated bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure and is planned to provide economic development opportunities.

By reducing the structural footprint, the RI DOT said it will decrease the percentage of structurally deficient bridge area in the state by 12 percent. The new smaller bridge will provide better access management for future development of approximately 25 acres and will decrease the need for maintenance.
