RI Weather Forecast: Blizzard's Snowfall Estimates

Blizzard-like conditions are forecasted for Thursday. Here's what's expected across the state.

Mother Nature is ringing in the new year with a one-two punch of blizzard-like snowfall and brutally low temperatures in New England this week. Some areas could see up to a foot of snow as a wintry mix starting in the southeastern coast makes its way up to the Northeast.

The storm is slated to track close enough to the coast to bring snow and windy conditions to much of the Atlantic Seaboard Wednesday night to Friday, and it is expected to undergo "rapid" strengthening from Thursday to Friday.

Accuweather is warning of blizzard conditions. The National Weather Service says the heaviest snowfall will be about 6-8 inches for the southeastern part of Rhode Island and 4-6 inches elsewhere.

In Massachusetts, 6-8 inches is expected in parts of the South Shore down to New Bedford, and a bit of the North Shore. Areas between I-95 and I-495 will likely see 4-6 inches. The snowfall is expected to taper the farther west you get in Massachusetts. About 3-4 inches is forecasted for central Massachusetts, and a relative dusting of 2-3 inches is expected for the western part of the state, the National Weather Service said. The Cape should see 3-4 inches.

Meanwhile those arctic temperatures aren't going anywhere. Wednesday and Thursday will be a balmy 29 degrees, but Friday's low temperatures dip right back down to minus 5 and on Saturday minus 8. So even when the snow stops, we get to do this sub-zero dance all over again.
