University Orthopedics Celebrates Major Milestone for Procedures

University Orthopedics' East Bay Surgery Center Celebrates 300+ Successful Total Joint Replacement Procedures

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (April 7, 2021) — Just over a year after performing its first same-day total joint replacement at the East Bay Surgery Center, University Orthopedics marked an impressive milestone - its 300th successful same-day total joint replacement at the state-of-the-art facility.

“The East Bay Surgery Center was the first of its kind in Rhode Island when we first opened, offering a modern, concierge-style approach to total joint replacement surgery in 2019. Since then, hundreds of patients have successfully undergone same-day joint replacement procedures here,” said Edward Akelman, M.D., President of University Orthopedics. “This accomplishment is a true testament to our talented staff of medical professionals, from the surgeons and nurses at the center, to the CNAs and therapists who continue the care when patients return home.”
The East Bay Surgery Center at University Orthopedics’ Kettle Point offices features a team of world-class, highly specialized surgeons and medical staff who are focused exclusively on musculoskeletal care. Every aspect of the facility is designed with the patient experience in mind including:

  • Pre-op personalized education tailored to the patient’s condition and procedure
  • Integrated evaluation and individualized attention from our educators, physical therapists, and anesthesiologists with advanced training in pain management
  • Concierge-type care at home including CNAs, physical therapists, and visiting nurses.

“Study after study shows patients recover better in the comfort of their own home. The integrated approach we take at University Orthopedics and the East Bay Surgery Center provides patients the best of all worlds - offering the highest quality and safest care possible, allowing for rapid rehabilitation and recovery,” said Dr. Thomas Barrett MD.
