Glocester, Burrillville and Scituate Cops Nab NH Fugitive

Police before dawn pursued a white Cadillac with N.H. plates and arrested Matthew Durand, 27, who gave a Woonsocket address.

GLOCESTER, RI — Three Rhode Island police departments joined forces to pursue an erratic driver and arrest a Woonsocket man wanted as a criminal fugitive out of New Hampshire.

Early this morning, members of the Glocester, Burrillville, and Scituate police worked together to stop and arrest Matthew Durand, 27, with a last known address of 394 Cass Avenue in Woonsocket, according to a media release from Glocester Police Capt. Matthew Fague.

Burrillville police started pursuing a white Cadillac with New Hampshire plates on Rt. 100 at around 3 a.m. The chase led through Glocester and Scituate. The pursuit was terminated when the car fled into Connecticut.

A short time later, Glocester and Burrillville officers saw the vehicle heading east on Rt. 6 at a high rate of speed. Scituate police helped out by putting stop sticks down. The Cadillac hit the sticks, lost control, and came to a stop at the Rt. 6 bypass.

Durand was taken into custody. Police learned he had an extraditable warrant from the Cheshire County Sheriff’s Office in New Hampshire on a destruction of evidence charge.

Durand was arraigned this morning in 3rd District Court on the fugitive charge. Glocester Police charged him with reckless driving, eluding police, and driving on a suspended license. Scituate police hit him with a reckless driving and eluding charge.

Durand was also presented as a Rhode Island Superior Court probation violator. He was locked up at the ACI and is due back in court May 18 on the fugitive from justice charge.
