LINCOLN, RI — At-large School Committee member and political independent John Picozzi announced his candidacy for the open Town Administrator position earlier this month.

In a recent news release, Picozzi said he plans to focus on protecting Lincoln's profile as a desirable town to live and establish businesses and emphasized that he is dedicated to maintaining Lincoln’s affordable tax structure while exploring new sources of revenue.

If both men make the ballot, Picozzi will be up against Philip Gould, a captain with the Lincoln Police Department. Gould, also an independent, formally declared his candidacy Monday during an event at the Lincoln Country Club. A third candidate, Republican John Cullen, said he also plans to run. The position became vacant in March when former administrator Joseph Almond stepped down to join the administration of Gov. Dan McKee.

"All the wonderful qualities that make Lincoln the cherished home of families — our open spaces, our wonderful school system, our low tax rate — will be protected,” Picozzi stated. "While we develop new opportunities for businesses to relocate here, we will also explore programs that fully support current businesses, and help them grow."

Picozzi said his work on the School Committee, where he chairs the Capital Subcommittee, “reflects his commitment in meeting the needs of the future while remaining fiscally accountable.” He said he has pushed for district-wide accountability and transparency, the reorganization of Lincoln Middle School, expansion of the district's special education programs, and the improvement of athletic programs. He said he supports a Student Athletic Center "that fully meets the needs of students, athletes, and the community."

Picozzi is a graduate of Salve Regina University and the Lincoln public schools. He grew up in Lime Rock and resides in Albion with his son Andrew. Picozzi says he "has a deep appreciation for Lincoln’s history and is ready to lead the town into the future."

A special election to fill the Town Administrator post has been scheduled for Sept. 7, according to Lincoln Town Clerk Lillian Silva. If a primary is needed, it will be held on August 3. Candidate declarations are due on June 24 and 25, and papers are due back in the clerk's office on July 6.
