Fallen Tree Cuts Power To 2,700 In South County

Most affected residents had power restored by 4:30 p.m.

RICHMOND, RI — More than 2,700 Rhode Island residents are without power on Wednesday afternoon. Most of the outages are in South County, where nearly all of Richmond is without power thanks to a downed tree.

The tree fell on Sand Hill Road around 3:30 p.m., National Grid said. Initial reports said power was expected to be restored by 5:15 p.m., but most residents had service before 4:30 p.m. At the outage's peak, just over 2,700 residents were affected.

Six other scattered outages were reported across the state from Westerly to Providence, each affected five or fewer residents.

More outages are possible throughout the evening as scattered showers and thunderstorms move throughout the region. The National Weather Service issued a special weather statement and hazardous weather outlook for Rhode Island. The worst of it is expected to hit during the evening commute and into Thursday morning.
