School Bus Crash On Route 138 Injures 2

RICHMOND, RI — A vehicle crossed over the center line on Route 138 early Friday morning, crashing into a Narragansett school bus van with two students inside. The bus driver and one of the teenage students sustained minor injuries and all three were taken to South County Hospital for evaluation.

The crash happened near the intersection of of Heaton Orchard Road in Richmond around 7 a.m., Richmond police said. The school bus van, which was bringing the students to Chariho High School, was in the westbound lane when the other vehicle, a red Dodge SUV, crossed over the center line, sideswiping the van. The impact caused the Dodge to swerve off the road, crashing into several trees.

The crash caused traffic delays along the busy Route 138 corridor for around 45 minutes as crews worked to clear the scene.

"Fortunately no one was seriously injured," the Richmond Police Department wrote in a statement. "We thank surrounding agencies for mutual aid they rendered, the eyewitnesses who came forward to offer their account of what happened and the patience of motorists who experienced delays this morning."
