5 THINGS: Music, Discoveries and Free Swim

Shake off the winter doldrums with a variety of events before February vacation starts!

Here are the (more than) Five Things for Sunday, February 17, 2013:

NOTE: Perform a schedule check! Because there was some snow and what not on Saturday night in some portions of the state, it doesn’t hurt to perform a schedule check for all of the following events and anywhere else you might be going.

Cool music at Cool Beans! The coffee shop is hosting an open mic session today, along with a fundraiser for the North Kingstown High School literary magazine. The store is open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, although the open mic starts at 11 a.m. For more info, check out the store’s Facebook account.

Discovering a Native American village in Narragansett. The name of this lecture is self-explanatory, no? It’s free, and starts at 1 p.m. at the Bay Campus. For more info, click here. The lecture is hosted by the Friends of Canonchet Farm.

Has the time or date or details of one of your events changed? If you posted the event yourself on our site, then remember – You can always change the details if you’re logged into your Patch account. Failing that, leave a comment on the item in question! The issue is that lately, people have been e-mailing me, and depending on the time of the day, it can take me anywhere from 30 minutes or 30 hours to get to the item, unfortunately. As a result, I encourage you all to be as proactive as possible!

Oh no! Maybe there seriously aren’t that many events today, given that it’s the anniversary of the passing of Thelonious Monk. As a result, our events calendar for today is a bit barren. If you’re having an event, please let us know in the comments. Also, make sure it isn’t left out in the future – Submit it via this link (as long as you’re logged into your Patch account).

Sign up for our daily newsletter! Hey, I realize we have a lot of neat features and knick-knacks on the site, so it can be confusing to keep up with it all. Want just one simple, easy to read daily digest? Sign up for our e-mail newsletter here then. It comes out between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. roughly, every single day of the week. Amazing, I know!

Space stuff is fascinating, no lie! On this day in 1996, NASA launched the Discovery Program, which is focused on smaller, drone and automated research projects on things like asteroids.

“I make movies for teenage boys. Oh dear, what a crime.” – Michael Bay. Happy 48th birthday to the director, who has, let us say, an assorted filmography. On the plus side – The Rock, Transformers and Bad Boys. Not so good: Pretty much everything else.
