Ahead Of Memorial Day, Rhode Island Gas Prices Near $3 Per Gallon

The average cost for a gallon of gas is now $2.94, nearly a dollar per gallon more than this time last year.

PROVIDENCE, RI — Just one week before Memorial Day, gas prices continue to climb in Rhode Island, nearing an average of $3 per gallon.

The current price for a gallon of regular, unleaded gas in Rhode Island is $2.94, up one cent from last week. That's 13 cents higher than this time last month, and 97 cents higher than last year.

Memorial Day travelers might see higher prices if they cross state lines, since the national average is 9 cents higher than Rhode Island's. In Connecticut, the average cost per gallon is higher at $3.06, while Massachusetts is slightly lower than Rhode Island at $2.91

AAA Northeast said that drivers might see low supply at gas stations, but likely not the extreme shortages and widespread sellouts seen in the immediate wake of the Colonial Pipeline shutdown.

"Holiday road trippers may come across some gas stations with low fuel supply in popular travel destinations, like beaches, mountains or national parks," said Lloyd ALbert, a spokesperson for the company. "However, markets are not expected to be fuel-less, like we saw in the wake of the pipeline shutdown."

AAA Northeast encouraged drivers to plan ahead before heading out for holiday weekend travel, checking the tires, battery and engine before heading the road. If heading to a popular tourist spot, consider fueling up before you reach your destination, since gas prices tend to be higher in busy areas.
