SOUTH KINGSTOWN, RI — Amidst Rhode Island's coronavirus crisis, a South County animal shelter reached a very special milestone in March. Last month, Animal Rescue Rhode Island adopted out 63 animals, the highest number in the shelter's 82-year history.

When the shelter announced that it had to temporarily close down due to the virus, the community responded in a big way. On top of the 63 adoptions — which averages to more than 2 per day — all remaining animals were placed into foster homes.

"It’s incredibly heartwarming to witness our local community rally to help our animals during such a difficult time," Michele Vidmar, the organization's executive director, said in a statement.

So far this year, the organization has seen a 37 percent increase in adoptions, year over year. Last month's total broke the previous monthly adoption record of 53.

While the shelter is empty for now, is will eventually reopen its door for adopters, dependent on the situation surrounding the coronavirus. Animals that have been placed in foster homes are still available for adoption, and new animals will begin to arrive as soon as the facility reopens. Anyone interested in adoption is encouraged to fill out an application online. Adoption fees are waived for veterans.
