At about 1:12 p.m. on Feb. 27, police received a report of a black and white shorthair cat stuck in a tree on Wood Sorrel Terrace.

According to Narragansett Animal Control Officer Art Smith, the cat appeared to be about 30 feet up and mobile. As a result, he advised the calling party to wait another day, since cats often got themselves down.

However, Smith said that he was called back at about 8:21 a.m. on March 1, because the cat still hadn’t gotten itself down. Smith said that as a result, he and a ladder unit from the Narragansett Fire Department went to rescue the cat at about 11:26 a.m.

Smith said that with the help of Lt. Scott McLaughlin and firefighter Zachary Calabrese, he was able to climb the ladder and snatch the cat with a noose pole.

In the process, Smith said the cat scratched him, in its stressed condition. The cat was taken to an animal shelter for a 10-day quarantine and observation period, but Smith said it appeared to be healthy.

Smith said that the cat is OK as of Tuesday, March 19, and remains available for adoption. The town uses South Kingstown for its animal shelter and pound.
