Boat Sinks Near Point Judith After Catching Fire

The Newport Fire Department helped rescue the three people aboard before the boat sank.

POINT JUDITH, RI — A fishing boat caught fire and sunk in the waters near Point Judith Thursday afternoon. Newport's fire department was called to assist, and was able to rescue all crew members before the vessel went down.

The fire was reported around 11 a.m. The fire crew was called to the choppy waters about two miles south of Point Judith, where the 40-foot vessel was on fire. The firefighters were able to rescue the three crew members aboard and bring them back to shore safely, the city oof Newport said in a statement.

By 1 p.m., the boat had begun taking on water, later sinking to a depth of about 105 feet.
