Police Detective Hit During Chase
According to a statement from Narragansett Police Chief Dean Hoxsie, one officer was transported to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment after he was hit during a chase this morning that started in North Kingstown and ended in Narragansett.
11:40 a.m. – Narragansett Police Chief Dean Hoxsie has released a statement about this morning’s hit and run accident, confirming that a Narragansett police officer and the suspects in the chase were both taken to hospitals for treatment.
According to Hoxsie, at 8 a.m. Monday, Narragansett officers became involved in a car chase that started in North Kingstown. Hoxsie said the car driven by the suspects U-turned on Boston Neck Road, almost hitting a state police cruiser in the process.
From there, Hoxsie said the car entered the Rio Vista neighborhood (Wampum Road) while attempting to flee, and hit a police car and an officer. The car was then followed into Bonnet Shores, where it left the roadway at the Bonnet Shores Community Center.

According to Hoxsie, the suspects were caught shortly after the crash at the community center. Police said the two suspects, who were believed to be under the influence of narcotics, were taken into custody and are being held at South County Hospital.
Typically, suspects in cases of this nature are arrested following any treatment at area hospitals. At this time, it is unknown if any shots were fired. Police said it was reported that the suspects were possibly armed.

Hoxsie said the injured officer was transported to the Rhode Island Hospital Trauma Unit for examination. His current status is unknown. The officer was not named in Hoxsie’s release, but according to town sources, the injured officer is Detective Kyle Edwards.
10:45 a.m. – Narragansett and Rhode Island State Police remain at the scene of a crash between a Narragansett Police Department cruiser and a four-door Ford passenger car on Wampum Road, just off Boston Neck Road, in Narragansett.
Official details about the crash, and whether the driver of the Ford or the officer involved were seriously injured, remain unknown. It is unknown if another car was involved in the chase or the crash at this point.
Based on markings at the intersection of Wampum Road and Boston Neck Road, it appears that a car attempted to make a hard left turn from Boston Neck Road on to Wampum. At this point, a car collided with the front end of a Narragansett Police Department cruiser.
Calls remain out to Narragansett and state police for comment. According to a reader, the initial incident happened before 8:25 a.m. Businesses in the area are now open, and traffic has resumed flowing, although access to Wampum Road is restricted.
