KINGSTON, RI — The University of Rhode Island is urging students and staff to get their coronavirus vaccine as more transmissible variants of the virus were identified on campus. A pair of vaccine clinics will be held just down the street from campus this weekend, with university-sponsored transportation available.

The clinics will be held Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Schneider Electric facility at 125 Fairgrounds Rd. The Pfizer vaccine will be administered Saturday, and the Moderna vaccine on Sunday.

The university will continuously run a shuttle from the Memorial Union on the Kingston campus to the vaccine sites, URI said in a statement. Students with their own vehicles will have plenty of room to park onsite.

Several cases of the more transmissible variants of COVID-19 found throughout the state have been identified on campus throughout the past weeks, URI said.

"While this is not unexpected, it reinforces why it is so important to protect yourself and others by continuing to wear a mask when you are in public places and around others you do not live with, washing your hands frequently, participating in bi-weekly surveillance testing, self-monitoring for symptoms, and getting vaccinated," said Dr. Christopher Nasin, the medical director at URI Health Services.

All students and staff are still encouraged to get tested for COVID-19 every other week, regardless of vaccination status.
