Detour Scheduled For Route 78 Repavement

The eastbound lanes of the Westerly highway will be detoured overnight during construction. Westbound lanes will be repaved in the fall.

WESTERLY, RI — The Rhode Island Department of Transportation has announced a plan to completely repave Route 78 in Westerly. The eastbound lanes will be repaved first, with construction slated to start on Monday. The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year.

During the first phase of construction, the eastbound lanes of the highway will be closed from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. from the Connecticut state line to Exit Five Monday through Thursday. While the road is closed, driver will be detoured onto Route 2 South, into downtown Westerly on High Street and head east on Oak Street to the Exit 5 on-ramp.

RIDOT
RIDOT said repaving is scheduled to start two weeks after the start of pavement milling, weather permitting. The same overnight detour will be in place during paving.

Construction on the westbound lanes is scheduled to start around Labor Day in September. RIDOT expects the $3 million project to be finished before the end of the year.
