Cat Food Recall: State Health

CRANSTON, RI — A cat food that's sold in Rhode Island is being taken off the shelves because of possible contamination. According to the state health department, Radigast Pet Food, Inc. is recalling some chicken and turkey raw diet cat foods, due to a risk of listeria. The pets could become ill from eating the food, and humans are at risk from handling it.

So far, no illnesses have been reported, the state health department said. The free-range chicken variety is from lot 62762 and has these codes: 8oz UPC 8 51536 00103 6; 16oz UPC 8 51536 00104 3; and 24oz UPC 8 51536 00105 0.

The free-range turkey variety comes from lot 62926 and has these codes: 8oz UPC 8 51536 00100 5; 16oz UPC 8 51536 00101 2; and 24oz UPC 8 51536 00102 9. Customers can return them to stores for a refund.

"Animals exposed to Listeria monocytogenes can display symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, and muscular or respiratory abnormalities," the health department said. "If your pet has consumed the recalled product and exhibits these symptoms, contact your veterinarian." People should see a doctor if they have symptoms.

The state health department warns against feeding raw food to pets.

"Pet owners should not feed raw food diets to pets because of the potential presence of pathogens such as Listeria and Salmonella," the office said.
