GFWC Loves Libraries: One Book at a Time
Local Women's Club and Bookstore Team Up with Libraries to Add New Titles to Collections
The General Federation of Women’s Clubs, an international civic organization founded in 1890 to promote civic improvement through volunteer service, has long supported libraries. Its local branch, the Women’s Club of South County, is continuing this tradition “One Book at a Time,” by encouraging South County residents to donate books to the area’s public libraries. Participating libraries are Westerly Library and Wilcox Park, Maury Loontjens Memorial Library in Narragansett, Cross’ Mills Public Library in Charlestown, South Kingstown’s Peace Dale Library, and Willett Free Library in North Kingstown. Throughout March, anyone—not just members of the club—can visit Wakefield Books at wakefieldbooks.com, click on “wish lists,” and find the library of their choice to see what books librarians at each site want added to their collections. Many of the 100-titles listed feature girls or women in honor of Women’s History Month. The process works much like a wedding registry. Books can also be purchased via phone: (401) 792-0000.
All of the titles purchased through the “One Book at a Time” program will be picked up by a member of the South County Women’s Club and delivered to the library. Wakefield Books is donating 20 percent of each book’s price back to the WCSC, which uses such funds for community improvement.
The Women’s Club of South County is a nonprofit 501 (c)(3) organization that welcomes new members who want to give back to the community through volunteer work.
