Great Island Bridge Temporarily One Lane

An inspection reveals unexpected deterioration to the Great Island Bridge.

Increased deterioration of the timber deck of the Great Island Bridge, which connects Galilee to Great Island in Narragansett, has led to a lowering of the weight limit for the bridge.

According to the Rhode Island Department of Transportation and Narragansett police, the limit has been lowered to three tons. Traffic will also be limited to one lane, in order to maintain the bridge’s condition while repairs are conducted.

State officials said materials have been ordered for the repairs, which are expected to take place next week. The repairs are only expected to take a week, and the bridge itself is scheduled for replacement in 2013.
