High Surf Advisory Issued For South County, Newport

Expect breaking waves as high as eight to nine feet.

NARRAGANSETT, RI — A high surf advisory is in place across Newport and Washington counties in Rhode Island. The National Weather Service issued the alert starting at midnight and lasting until 6 p.m. on Friday.

During that time, there will be a high risk of rip currents and high surf, with waves breaking as high as eight or nine feet tall. Surfers and swimmers are advised to be aware of the strong currents and stay out of the water. Anglers and wave watchers, meanwhile, should plan to stay well away from the shore, as sudden waves can easily pull people out into the water, even from what may seem like a safe area.

The map below shows the high surf advisory, which includes part of Southeastern Massachusetts as well.
