Mariners Girls Swimmers in Hot Water Over Social Media Post
A social media post cost the Narragansett girls' swim team the regular season title, but the Division II meet is today at 2 p.m.

NARRAGANSETT, RI — The Narragansett High girls' swim team suspended 19 squad members last weekend after they posted a photograph on social media that was deemed inappropriate.
The punishment cost the Mariners the Division II title, which they had all but won after handing Middletown (9-1) a 49-45 defeat on Feb, 3.
The social media post was directed at the Islanders team, and Narragansett Athletic Director Dick Fossa said when he found out about it, he suspended the girls who participated.

"As a result of the suspensions, the girls will lose the opportunity to be named Division II Regular Season Co-Champions with Middletown," he said.
Technically, the squad could have come up with a share of the title, if the six girls who hadn't been suspended had managed to defeat Portsmouth. But they didn't, and Fosse's prediction came true.

"We will still be holding the meet with swimmers who were not part of the post/picture but will have a very small squad and no chance of defeating Portsmouth," he said.
On Feb. 15, swimming with a squad of just six, Narragansett suffered a 49-29 drubbing from Portsmouth (6-3).
The Mariners finished the regular season (8-2), good enough for second place in Division II.
"Other sanctions were imposed to members of the team including the suspensions but it is an internal Athletic Department matter," he said.
But now, it's time for the post-season and a chance for redemption.
The Division II title meet is set for Saturday afternoon (Feb. 18) at Roger Williams University.
