Narragansett Police Log: December 2, 2012

Unless otherwise noted, information about the following incidents was supplied by the Narragansett Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

“The cracks had been there for two years.”

At about 2 a.m., an officer noted a 2004 Hyundai XG350 partially blocking traffic on the Dillon Rotary near the Route 1 on-ramp. Police said cars had to pull around the Hyundai, which was parked in the roadway.

Police said the car was unoccupied, but the smell of burnt rubbed was in the air, and there were two large impact points in the middle of the windshield. Based on the evidence, police believed that the car had been in an accident, and a tow truck was called.

According to police, there was also an empty bottle of alcohol on the floor of the car. The driver’s side door was so damaged, it couldn’t be opened, the inspection stickers on the plates of the car were expired, and there were large cracks on the front and rear bumpers.

Police said that a tow truck was called, but while waiting for the truck, the car’s owner – Ryan M. Woodbine, 24, of 35 Woodward Ave., Narragansett – returned. 

According to police, Woodbine was uncooperative, and refused to tell officers why the car smelled of burnt rubber. He denied being in an accident, and told them, “The cracks had been there for two years and had nothing to do with anything going on tonight.”

Police said Woodbine was also upset that his car was being towed, and told them, “It’s the law that I have 24 hours to move my vehicle.”

A friend of Woodbine’s eventually arrived and gave him a ride from the scene. No arrests were made, and police noted that because of the smell of the car, the brakes had to be inspected by state investigators before it could be driven again.

However, on Dec. 5, police said that inspectors from the DMV notified them that they did not have the manpower to inspect the vehicle. As a result, it was released to a family member of Woodbine later that day.

URI Student Cited for Alcohol Violation

James J. Campbell, 20, of 45 Sylvan Road, Narragansett, was cited at about 12:14 a.m. on Dec. 2 and charged with possession of alcohol by a minor. Police said Campbell is a student at the University of Rhode Island.

According to police, an officer saw Campbell running from Sakonnet Boulevard to Sylvan Road. The officer made contact with Campbell to see what the issue was.

Police said that while speaking with Campbell, a bottle of Sailor Jerry rum could be seen hanging from his back pocket. As a result, the alcohol was confiscated after a background check revealed Campbell was underage.
