Narragansett Police Log: Asleep At the Wheel

South Kingstown Teen Charged With Drunken Driving

Bradford W. Hathaway, 19, of 931 Kingstown Road, South Kingstown, was arrested at about 1:23 a.m. on Jan. 9 and charged with drunken driving and possession of marijuana, and cited for transportation of alcohol by a minor and refusing to submit to a chemical test. Police said Hathaway is a student at the Community College of Rhode Island.

According to police, an officer noted a red Dodge Charger swerving and crossing into the breakdown lanes four separate times in 1.7 miles on Point Judith Road. A traffic stop was made near Westlake’s Garage as a result.

Police said the driver – Hathaway – smelled strongly of alcohol and had problems answering simple questions. Police also noted that Hathaway was under 21, and a bottle of Sailor Jerry’s spiced rum was visible on the floor of the car.

According to police, Hathaway was unable to do three segments of the standard field sobriety test battery because of a high ankle sprain. However, police said that he failed the first portion, which entails following a pen with your eyes.

Police said that based on the first test failure, the smell of alcohol on Hathaway and the presence of the rum in the car, Hathaway was arrested. Police said an inventory of Hathaway’s car also revealed a small bag with marijuana in it and a bottle of Jameson Irish Whiskey.

According to police, Hathaway refused to submit to a chemical test at headquarters. He was held for arraignment at Fourth Division District Court at 9 a.m.

Asleep Narragansett Man Cited for Expired License, Hitting Mailbox

Alvie Robert McClasky, 29, of 6 Ocean View Drive, Narragansett, was cited at about 4:51 a.m. on Jan. 9 and charged with driving with an expired license and failing to immediately report an accident.

According to police, at about 4:30 a.m. they received a report of a pickup truck on Sea Lea that had hit a mailbox. Police said when they investigated, they found the truck blocking the roadway on Sea Lea and Philip Drive.

Police said that the driver – McClasky – was asleep. When woken up by police, he told them he didn’t remember hitting the mailbox, and said he had had a few drinks at Rhody Joe’s and then drove home.

According to police, McClasky didn’t show any signs of intoxication when they spoke to him, and he did not smell of alcohol. A background check revealed an expired license, which he was cited for, as well as for failure to immediately report an accident.

Stolen Car Found on Newport Row

At about 9:10 a.m. on Jan. 9, police received a report of an unknown car parked at the base of a home on Newport Row. The homeowner told police that the car – a gold Toyota Camry – did not belong to her, and she didn’t know whose car it was.

According to police, the car came back as stolen from Cumberland. Police said there was minor exterior damage to the car, and a phone charger and plastic baggie had been left behind in the car.

Police said that based on interviews with neighbors, the car appeared at some point between 8 p.m. on Jan. 8 and 6:45 a.m. on Jan. 9. Police said that neighbors did not see a driver, and only noticed the car when they woke up in the morning.

According to police, at about 1:30 p.m. the owner of the car reported to headquarters and provided proper documentation for the vehicle. He filed a report, and the car was released.

The owner told police that he didn’t know who would have stolen his car. An arrest was not made, and the theft remains under investigation.
