Narragansett Skunk Tests Positive For Rabies

This is the third confirmed case of rabies in the town since March, Narragansett Animal Control said.

NARRAGANSETT, RI — A skunk tested positive for rabies on Monday, Narragansett Animal Control said, the third recently confirmed case in the town. The department will hold a rabies clinic next month.

According to the department, Animal Control officers were called to a house at 8:30 a.m. for a skunk chasing the caller's dog. The officers took the skunk to the Department of Health, where it tested positive for rabies.

This is the third confirmed case of rabies in Narragansett since March, the department said. The other cases were a skunk on Tarzwell Drive in the north end of town, a skunk on Wildfield Farm Road in the center of town and a raccoon on Kathy Street, in the south end of town.

"Please exercise caution when encountering wildlife and be sure your pets are up to date," the department said in a statement.

Animal Control is working with the Rhode Island Veterinary Medical Association to set up a rabies clinic in November, and will start holding twice-annual clinics, one in the spring and another in the fall. A date has not yet been announced for the upcoming clinic.
