Oh Look, It's A Black Bear: SK Police

A black bear was spotted roaming through high grass at Old Mountain Field in Wakefield on Tuesday morning and later near the high school.

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, RI—A furry visitor strolled through Wakefield Tuesday morning, South Kingstown police said. According to Capt. Joel Ewing-Chow, a black bear was spotted at 6:30 a.m. in the concession stands at Old Mountain Field. Police and Department of Environmental Management officers tracked the bear from Old Mountain Field to an area near South Kingstown High. Police said it was last spotted headed north on North Road.

This bear was "not at all aggressive" and did not approach people, police said. They are urging anyone who sees a bear not to go near it but to call police at 401-783-3321 or DEM at 401-222-3070. DEM is also asking people to follow these precautions to avoid attracting bears to their property.

•Store garbage in sheds and/or garages.
•Take garbage out for pickup on the morning of collection – not the night before.
•Keep barbecue grills clean of grease.
•Do not put meat or sweet food scraps in your compost pile.
