Rebels Advance; Prout Plays Today, Tomorrow

Thanks to 17 points from Mary Eden, per The Providence Journal, the South Kingstown girls’ basketball team will play on in the Division I playoffs.

Eden had three 3s, as No. 9 South Kingstown beat No. 8 Portsmouth 45-36. Maggie Buell had seven points, and Michaela Lawler and Stephanie Laraway each had six points.

South Kingstown gets the privilege of playing No. 1 seed La Salle 6:30 p.m. Friday at Rhode Island College. (Note: This game time was shifted from an earlier article.) If the Rebels win in the quarterfinals, they play 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 5 at Rhode Island College.

The Rebels were Division II second place finishers in 2000-01, and 2001-02, and Class C champions in 1990-91. The Rebels had three winning seasons from 2007 to 2010, but didn’t finish as one of the top two teams in the state after the playoffs.

Division II Playoffs

On Tuesday night, the No. 2 seeded Mariners beat No. 15 Mt. Hope 55-44 to advance to the quarterfinals. For our game story, click here. The Mariners play 12 p.m. Sunday against No. 7 East Greenwich, after the Avengers beat West Warwick on Tuesday.

No. 8 Prout (10-6 Division II) hosts No. 9 West Warwick (10-6 Division II) at 7 p.m. Wednesday. If the Crusaders win, they play at 6 p.m. Sunday against No. 1 Rogers (16-0 Division II).

Prout won the Division II title in 2010-11, thanks to a dominant year from Emily Caswell.

Boys’ State Tournament

The Crusaders are seeded No. 13 and play No. 4 Cumberland at Roger Williams University 8 p.m. Thursday. If the Crusaders upset Cumberland, then they play in the quarterfinals against either No. 5 North Smithfield or No. 12 Shea on Sunday at Alumni Hall on the Providence College campus.

Prout has never won a state or division title in boys’ basketball. The Crusaders came closest in 2006-07, finishing as Division III runners-up.

The Narragansett and South Kingstown boys’ basketball teams did not qualify for their division tournaments, or the open state tournament.
