RI Special Olympics Summer Games Start June 1

The games are at the University of Rhode Island.

NARRAGANSET-SOUTH KINGSTOWN, RI - From Special Olympics Rhode Island: Special Olympics Rhode Island will be hosting its biggest sports event of the year - the 2018 State Summer Games at the University of Rhode Island and we'll be celebrating our 50th Anniversary! The public is invited to join in the fun and cheer on the over 1,500 athletes who will participate in seven different competitions onJune 1, 2 & 3, 2018. The Summer Games is expected to attract more than 5,000 athletes, coaches, volunteers, family members and spectators over the course of the three day event; admission is free.

The 50th Annual State Summer Games Opening Ceremonies includes the traditional Parade of Athletes and lighting of the cauldron, using a torch that was part of a day-long Torch Run relay organized by Police, Firefighters, State Troopers and Corrections' Officers, as well as a one-hour concert by Billy Gilman. Competitions begin at noonon Friday and ending by 3:00pm; resume again onSaturday from 8:30am to 4:00pm and on Sunday from9:00am - 1:00pm. Sports competitions include athletics (track & field), bowling, cycling, MATP (motor activities training program), powerlifting, swimming and unified soccer.
